I noticed a report within tapatalk about Escanaba and Marquette leaving the GNC to join the Big North Conference in football.  Also, in that same thread it was mentioned that Sault Ste Marie would also join them. Does anyone have any information on or knowledge that this has happen?

On a sidenote, I think it is great that this site was created.

This is a very interesting possible change in the UP football community, was hoping someone on tapatalk would have some info but nothing. Unfortunately the topic kind of died, I have no information, but as I asked what happens to the other teams in the GNC?? Think we are getting closer to a giant conference of the remaining 11 man teams in the UP, also I see Ishpeming and West Iron County going 8 man within a few years, don't see Ishpeming (hope not) co-oping with either Negaunee or Westwood, not sure of the mood in WIC on a possible co-op over there. I agree we need a UP site just gotta figure out how to grow it..

8 man is the new norm -- more schools will move to it to find success.  West Iron, L'Anse, Ishpeming, and Manistique will be the next to move to it. They don't want to keep getting pounded by the Negaunee, Iron Mountain, etc..

At the end of the day, football is football.  It's better to have 8-man then no football program at all or co-op with another school.

@westernup Not sure that is true here in Ishpeming our school population is 215 without the co-op with RM,  would qualify us for 8 man this year, WIC 234....L'Anse 310.... and  Manistique 319 .... could play 8 man but would not be eligible for the playoffs because they all are over the 215 limit.. I can see us in Ishpeming going 8 man but it sure wouldn't be because of getting pounded by Negaunee or IM, we have had our time against both teams, it would be because we just can't field an 11 man team anymore....  But I do agree at the end of the day, football is football, and I hope we do NOT co-op with our neighbors when the time comes for us to decide to go 8 man....

@yoopernib Maybe not all of those schools -- WIC has forfeited more games the past few years than they have actually played.  8-man is soon.  L'Anse co-ops with Baraga.  Word on the street they would like to dump Baraga and go 8-man on their own.  Manstique has good numbers (plus they coop with Big Bay) so maybe not them.  Ishpeming is a brand name like Forest Park and Lake Linden Hubbell.  11 man or 8 man, these schools continue their success because they play teams the same size as them (as it should be).

@westernup Was once a fan of WIC but they seem to have turned into a very dirty team and I hear it comes from the top, our last few games with them have been very ugly, but with the MHSAA rules they couldn't compete in an 8 man playoff. L'Anse without their co-op is 188, Baraga is 123, those two teams could and probably should make two 8 man teams. Manistique less their co-op is at 263 still over the limit. Guess the sad part is the co-oping teams that would no longer have players eligible to play. In our recent glory years the kids we got from RM really made a difference, guess they could go back to Westwood. Talked to our AD about this and he told me he was told start talking 8 man and you might lose your job, he was surprised I was good with it, we have 3 maybe 5 years left of 11 man then the school population is just not going to be there, that's when I think the people of our community will figure it out co-op with Negaunee or Westwood or keep the tradition going and go 8 man to me the decision is simple. Also i think with the number of school that are playing 8 man that are over the limit the MHSAA should have an open division for any school over 215 students.
